Band of the Year 2012

I had the privilege to serve as the Music Coordinator for Formula Expo’s 2012 Band of the Year. I also served as the Music Coordinator for the actual Expo, which took place over a weekend in Austin at the Austin Convention Center; I booked and managed 12 musical acts over the two day period, ensuring that bands were loaded in and ready at their designated time slot.

Concerning the Band of the Year Contest, I initially spent time reaching out to numerous central Texas bands, encouraging them to submit an application. Once the semi-finalists were chosen (through an esteemed panel of judges), I got to the fun stuff. The semi-final rounds were held in Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio.

In each city, I handled all logistics for the evening ranging from coordinating load-in and sound check with Front of House and bands, welcoming the judges and informing them of the run of show and their responsibilities for the evening, and of course the actual run of show. Anyone who’s worked with musicians knows that it can be a bit like herding cats. But all joking aside, getting roughly 40 people per night in the right place at the right time was no easy feat.

Once the semi-finals were complete we moved on to the finale at ACL Live at the Moody Theater. Talk about a treat! Coordinating that evening was unlike any other so far. We had 8 bands compete in the finals, leaving each band with only 15 minutes for their set. The BOTY team and myself came up with a schedule that had to be executed fairly flawlessly if it was to run smoothly. And boy did it! We had a packed house, full of eager fans waiting to see if their favorite band would be “Band of the Year.” It was a fantastic evening!
