HAAM

In the Fall of 2009, I was finishing up my last semester at UT. One of my class requirements was that I plan a fundraiser for a local non-profit and then execute the event. I had recently heard rumblings about an up and coming organization that focused on providing access to health care for musicians. Since I love music, I decided to research this group a bit more. I found out that the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians, otherwise known as HAAM, provides access to affordable healthcare for low income, uninsured, working musicians. How cool is that?? There was no way I was going to find a non-profit that was a better fit for me, my class project, and my love for music. And so began my relationship with HAAM.

My event was well organized and given the ‘stamp of approval’ by the HAAM Board, which at that point was huge for me. “Forget the Turkey, Support HAAM” went off without a hitch, with 9 bands performing, raffles in between every set, plus giveaways of two autographed guitars [donated by Strait Music] and a YEAR’s worth of pizza [donated by Mr. Gatti's.] We ended up raising just under $7,000 for HAAM that night – not a bad start!

In 2010, the Executive Director, Carolyn Schwarz, contacted me in hopes that I would be interested in chairing a new ‘friends of HAAM’ group known as the Good Eggs & HAAM. We’ve gone through some rebranding and refocusing but are now proud and able to say that we are the social arm of HAAM.  The Good Eggs raise awareness and funds for HAAM through different social gatherings, including our annual concert fundraiser at the end of the year as well as HAAM gear (check out our custom HAAM TIKKRs in the top right picture!) Our goal is to encourage young (and young at heart) people to become engaged in issues that are important to our city, first and foremost for us – health care the lifeblood of our city, MUSICIANS. But who says you can’t have fun while supporting great causes? All of our events revolve around music and a good time.
